The Basque Country / Euskal Herria is a community located on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea and with strong cultural traditions, a famous gastronomy and a language, Euskera, which precedes the Romance languages. It is the oldest language in Europe still spoken today and the only isolated one on the continent, which is why Euskal Herria has aroused the interest of linguists, anthropologists and historians from all over the world.
Since the Paleolithic, whose cave paintings in the Santimamiñe, Ekain and Altxerri caves have granted us the declaration of World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Basques seem to have always occupied these territories. Neither the invasions of the Visigoths nor those of the Muslims seem to have reached Vizcaya or Guipúzcoa, although their coasts were probably devastated by the Vikings. In the Modern Age, from the Brotherhood formed by the main Cantabrian ports among which were the Basque ports of Fuenterrabía, San Sebastian, Guetaria and Bermeo, the ships and crews that participated in the Discovery of America left and great navigators and explorers stood out in the maritime arts.
Since the middle of the 19th century, thanks to being one of the initial centers of the industrial revolution in Spain, the Basque Country had a strong growth, receiving a large immigration from other Spanish regions and shaping, with the Basques of origin, the current Basque society. The autonomous community with the highest percentage of spending on R&D activities and, despite its relatively small size, one of the richest regions in Europe.
